Can you? (A poem)

Can you?

Can you hear it?

Can you smell it?

Can you see it?

Can you feel it?

Then it must be.

I can hear the silent sobs
from the girl next door.
Can her family not?
Do they not realize
what is barely hanging
from a thread?

I can smell the fear
from the girl next door.
Can her family not?
Do they not realize
what is barely hanging
from a thread?

I can see the blood
from the girl next door.
Can her family not?
Do they not realize
what is barely hanging
from a thread?

I can feel the pulse
from the girl next door.
Can her family not?
Do they not realize
what is barely hanging
from a thread?

She did not know
that I was there.
She merly thought.
Thought she was alone.

It must have been real.
I am at her funeral now.
There her mothers cries.
There her brothers hides.
There her fathers battle.
There her sister dies.

Her mothers criy,
for a daughter lost.

Her fathers battle,
within themselves.

Her brothers hide,
the smell of drugs.

Her sister dies,
from the loss.
The loss of the only
thing she had.

I can. Can you?

Egypt prosecutor orders arrest of Brotherhood leaders

By Maggie Fick and Peter Graff

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's prosecutor ordered the arrest on Wednesday of the leaders of ousted President Mohamed Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood, charging them with inciting violence that saw 55 of their members shot dead.

A week after the army toppled Egypt's first democratically elected leader, the bloodshed on Monday has opened fissures in the Arab world's most populous country, with levels of bitterness unseen in its modern history.

Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad said the announcement of charges against leader Mohamed Badie and several other senior figures was a bid by authorities to break up a vigil by thousands of Mursi supporters demanding his reinstatement.

The leaders were charged with inciting the violence which began before dawn, when the Brotherhood says its followers were fired on while peacefully praying. The army says terrorists provoked the shooting by attacking its troops.

The past week's violence alarmed Western donors and Israel, which has a 1979 peace treaty with Egypt. Washington, treading a careful line, has neither welcomed Mursi's removal nor denounced it as a "coup", which under U.S. law would require it to halt aid including the $1.3 billion it gives the army each year.

The Brotherhood's downfall has been welcomed by wealthy Gulf states Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which offered Egypt $8 billion in aid on Tuesday.

The charges against the Brotherhood leaders were "nothing more than an attempt by the police state to dismantle the Rabaa protest", Haddad said by telephone from the vigil at Rabaa Adaweya mosque in northeast Cairo. He said some of the leaders whose arrest was being sought were at the site of the protest.

"What can we do? In a police state when the police force are criminals, the judiciary are traitors, and the investigators are the fabricators, what can one do?"

RAMADAN OVERSHADOWED

In addition to Badie, prosecutors ordered the arrest of others including his deputy, Mahmoud Ezzat, and outspoken party leaders Essam El-Erian and Mohamed El-Beltagi.

The new interim prime minister on Wednesday reached for liberals to revive a shattered economy as he began forming a government to try to heal the bitterly divided nation. Egyptians had hoped the start of the Ramadan Muslim fasting month would cool passions but it has been overshadowed by rancor.

Hazem el-Beblawi, a 76-year-old economist and former finance minister named to head the cabinet on Tuesday, told Reuters he would start selecting ministers and would begin by meeting liberal politicians Mohamed ElBaradei and Ziad Bahaa el-Din.

Both are prominent figures in the National Salvation Front, the main secularist group that led protests against Mursi.

Both also support a stalled $4.8 billion loan deal with the International Monetary Fund, which would require Egypt to make politically painful reforms to subsidies for food and fuel that support its 84 million people but drain its finances.

Beblawi accepted that it would be a challenge to find a cabinet line-up with universal support. "I don't believe that anything can have unanimous approval," he told Reuters.

"Of course we respect the public opinion and we try to comply with the expectation of the people but there is always a time of choice. There is more than one alternative, you cannot satisfy all of the people."

BROTHERHOOD CONDEMNS "FASCIST COUP"

The Brotherhood has said it will have nothing whatsoever to do with a government of what it calls a "fascist coup".

Beblawi was named prime minister by the military-backed interim head of state installed after the army removed Mursi. ElBaradei, a former U.N. diplomat, has been named vice president. Bahaa el-Din, a former head of Egypt's investment authority, has been touted for senior posts.

The promised cash, loans and fuel from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates will go a long way to easing a deep economic crisis that has worsened during two and a half years of instability since autocrat Hosni Mubarak was swept from power by a popular revolt.

But the Gulf money could also reduce the incentive for Egypt to make the subsidy reforms the IMF says are needed to stabilize public finances, draw investment and rekindle economic growth.

Despite the violence that followed Mursi's removal, the interim authorities are proceeding with the army's "road map" to restore civilian rule. On Tuesday they announced a temporary constitution, plans to amend it, and a timetable for elections beginning in about six months.

Those moves already demonstrated the difficulty achieving political consensus, even among Mursi's opponents. The secularist NSF initially rejected the interim constitution, as did Islamists and others, although on Wednesday the NSF withdrew its rejection and issued a new, milder criticism.

Beblawi has indicated he would be open to offering cabinet posts to Islamists, including Brotherhood figures, although it seems impossible to imagine the Brotherhood accepting.

NOUR PARTY ASCENT

The authorities are courting the approval of Egypt's second largest Islamist group, the ultra-orthodox Nour Party, to demonstrate that Islamists will not be repressed as they were for decades under military-led rule.

Nour officially withdrew from politics in response to Monday's violence but has said it does not object to Beblawi's appointment and will assist his government.

Nour spokesman Nader Bakkar said on Wednesday the group would not accept posts in the new cabinet but would offer "consent and advice to help the cabinet pass through the transition period as soon as possible and with minimum damages".

"We are waiting to help. We are ready to advise but for the time being we still take the decision not to participate in the political process until the judiciary committee gives its report about what happened (on Monday)."

Bloodshed has abated since Monday's incident, the deadliest since Mubarak's fall, apart from a 2012 soccer stadium riot.

However, there are fears that the political violence could lead to a breakdown in security, especially in the lawless Sinai peninsula region bordering Israel.

Two people were killed and six wounded overnight when Islamist militants attacked a Sinai checkpoint.

On Tuesday Israeli troops found the remains of a rocket they believe was fired across the border from Egypt.

30,000 California Prisoners Launch The Largest Hunger Strike In State History

california prison overcrowding reading

Reuters/Lucy Nicholson

An inmate reads a book in a gymnasium where they are housed due to overcrowding at the California Institution for Men state prison in Chino, California, June 3, 2011.

An estimated 30,000 inmates in jails across California are participating in a hunger strike to protest against solitary confinement and other conditions they say amount to torture.

Prisoners refused meals for a second day on Tuesday in about two dozen jails, signalling what was thought to be the biggest protest of its kind in California's history.

The campaign is a ramped-up sequel to hunger strikes in 2011, which shone international attention on the state's troubled penal system but failed to wring significant concessions from authorities.

A group of inmates at the maximum security Pelican Bay state prison in Crescent City has organised the protest, saying they will starve themselves unless the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) agrees to meaningful negotiations.

At any one time, California holds about 12,000 inmates in extreme isolation, including some who have been in windowless boxes known as security housing units (SHUs) for decades. They are allowed out for an hour a day to exercise ? some in a yard, others in a kennel-size cage.

Supporters say the strike is a legitimate response to cruel and inhumane conditions. "The use of prolonged solitary confinement is a form of torture," said Laura Downton, director for US Policy and Program at the National Religious Campaign Against Torture. "We stand with them in their call for five core demands."

The strikers have issued a number of demands, including the end to group punishment, an overhaul to the policy of identifying suspected gang members, an end to long-term solitary confinement, better education and rehabilitation programmes, and the provision of adequate and nutritious food.

The principal grievance is California's unusual policy of indefinitely putting suspected gang members in solitary and moving them back into the regular jail only if they identify fellow gang members.

The protest has united black, Latino and white inmates, including members of racist gangs. "It's phenomenal. They are coming together because they know in unity is where ultimate victory lies," said Dolores Canales, co-founder of California Families to Abolish Solitary Confinement.

"The mood is hopeful, but this also shows how hard things are. They are sacrificing the one thing that is given to them to keep them alive." Many family members on the outside have joined the strike, she said.

The Pelican Bay leaders had defied their isolation, and the supposed mutual loathing between racial groups, to organise the mass protest, said Laura Magnani of the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker advocacy group. "Prisoners have to communicate and find ways to do it. They have a grapevine. It's amazing."

Inmates in two-thirds of the state's 33 jails, as well as four out-of-state jails, started refusing meals on Monday, said corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton. Inmates are deemed to be on hunger strike if they skip nine meals. Authorities said that about 30,000 are classified to be taking part on the action.

Meanwhile, around 2,300 prisoners also refused to turn up for work or classes, some citing illness.

At its peak, the 2011 hunger strike, also led by Pelican Bay inmates, drew about 12,000 inmates in about 11 jails. It ended after authorities promised to consider reforms.

The California assembly held hearings, and the gang validation procedure was tweaked so an inmate would be deemed a gang member based on behaviour, not on association with other inmates.

But what inmates saw as insufficient change and follow-up prompted the new protest, which has been planned for months.

"Our decision does not come lightly," said a June 20 letter from the Pelican Bay leaders. "For the past two years we've patiently kept an open dialogue with state officials, attempting to hold them to their promise to implement meaningful reforms, responsive to our demands."

It said its leaders had participated in a mediation session ? ordered by a judge in their class action lawsuit ? but that authorities acted in bad faith.

"Thus we are presently out of alternative options for achieving the long overdue reform to this system and, specifically, an end to state-sanctioned torture, and now we have to put our lives on the line via indefinite hunger strike to force CDCR to do what's right.

"We are certain that we will prevail ? the only questions being: How many will die starvation-related deaths before state officials sign the agreement? The world is watching!"

The start of the protest, though more than double the size of the previous one, has generated some local media attention but not made national headlines as yet.

The use of solitary confinement spread from federal to state penitentiaries, especially in California, which said gang violence behind bars required isolation cells to separate the "worst of the worst".

The California Correctional Peace Officers Association, a union representing 27,400 members, has defended their right to select inmates for solitary confinement and to determine the punishment's duration, saying it helps to tamp down violence.

Terry Downton, of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, said the policy caused psychological harm and worsened violence. "After 15 days in isolation the chemistry of the brain begins to change ? leading to increasing rates of hallucinations, paranoia and self-mutilation. It has become a default management tool rather than a tool of last resort."

Now that we've celebrated America's 237th birthday, conjecture can continue unabated on Major League Baseball (MLB) trade rumors until the sport's trade deadline occurs at the end of this month.

There are a number of teams in both the American (AL) and National (NL) Leagues who could be either buyers or sellers by the 4 p.m. Eastern time trade cutoff on July 31. The biggest lead in any MLB division is currently held by the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, a five-game margin over the Washington Nationals.

Staying in the senior circuit, right behind the Braves and Nationals in the East are the Philadelphia Phillies. They have a veteran team that could be on the verge of being broken apart in order to shed big contracts and get younger.?Second baseman Chase Utley's name has been bandied about as a possible trade target. Relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon also could find himself heading out of town, if the right deal can be made.

In the NL Central, there's a tight race between the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cincinnati Reds. The Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers bring up the rear in the division. Cubs president Theo Epstein, who helped create a two-time World Series-winning Boston Red Sox club, is looking to re-tool the Cubs in a similar fashion, and has chips like outfielder Alfonso Soriano and pitcher Matt Garza to deal.

Rothman Returns As USA Juniors Coach At Maccabi Games

Spanish River coach Rick Rothman will serve as a coach for the United States Junior Track & Field team at the 19th Maccabi Games in Israel. ?The games are considered the Jewish Olympics and take place every four years, the year after the Olympics. One of Rothman's former vaulters, Rob Fellman who went onto vault at the University of Maryland is the Track and Field and Half Marathon Chairman for Maccabi USA and asked him if he would be interested in joining the staff in 2009. Rothman says it was a great in experience the first time and something he couldn't turn down when asked again.

"It was a terrific cultural, athletic, and religious journey. We had a great team, great people, and a great trip. The decision to go again was easy when they asked."

The cultural part of the trip is something very important to Rothman. A lot of these athletes will be making their first trip to one of the holiest places in the world.

Since the athletes on the United States team are from all over the country, Rothman relies on workouts from their current coaches. The event runs from July 17-July 30th so the coach only works with them for three weeks. He says he wants them to maintain the schedules they are currenly on and his goal is to help prepare them for international competition.

Rothman will be familiar with several of the coaches as well as athletes. Spanish River assistant coach Melissa Perlman is also on the coaching staff while Alex Smolka, the FAU head coach will serve as the coach for the open athletes. On Rothman's roster, will be current Spanish River runner Jordana Kimelman and Halli Mel.and of Ransom Everglades. Rothman hopes his athletes can experience everything the Maccabi Games has to offer.

"My goal for these athletes is that I want them to have a great athletic as well as cultural experience while in Israel."

Victoria and David's trip to China brought us a flurry of Beckham Twitter activity, including a snap of VB grinning (yes, really), but now home she is still tweeting about China as she revealed her Vogue China cover.

For her cover shot by Josh Olins she wears a nude lace strapless bodice, with Tiffany & Co hoop earrings and her hair slicked back into a tight pony. It's simple but oh so stylish. The fashion bunny also tweeted the picture of her cover and a snap of her posing on a sofa in stilettos with the caption 'Do you like my couch?' Once again proving to us that she does have a sense of humour via her Twitter account.

In the mag she opens up about juggling being a mother of four and running her expanding fashion empire: 'When you are successful the hardest thing is maintaining that level of success, so you work harder to maintain what you have achieved.' She added: 'It's a huge juggling act, when you are a working mother and looking after your family, millions and millions of women around the world are doing this every day. But it's not easy and yes, you feel guilty every time you walk out of the door to go to work!'

The Spice Girl also revealed that she feels prouder when she sees a woman wearing Victoria Beckham than standing on a stage in front of thousands of screaming fans. She said: 'I have been in the limelight for over 20 years/ I am not on an ego trip, empowering women and making them feel sexy and great when they wear my clothes means more than thousands of people clapping. Empowering women is what makes me feel good.'

In her interview she also gives a shout out to her fans in China as she said: 'I love China. The women really understand fashion and I can honestly say the women who come to my events are some of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. They have remarkable bodies and are happy and positive and I love that. I think they know what looks good, how to accessorise and have beautiful hair and flawless skin.' She added: 'When I come to China I get given many little gifts and notes from the fans and that genuinely means a lot to me.'

Victoria has come a long way since the Cavalli days, as she has made the giant leap from a hair-extension wearing WAG with a weakness for cut-outs to a slick, acclaimed fashion designer. The Vogue China cover cements her status as a fashion force to be reckoned with.

Rap music has a history of fashion name-checking, be it Kanye West's call-outs to Margiela, A$AP Rocky's laundry list of designers in "Fashion Killa" or many other examples. This time around, it's Tom Ford's turn in the emcee's spotlight, in a track on Jay-Z's forthcoming album, "Magna Carta Holy Grail."

Jay gave Tom Ford a shoutout in his collaboration with Justin Timberlake on "Suit and Tie" earlier this year, and it seems Hov would like to stay in the designer's good graces, as he's now named an entire song after Ford. The refrain: "I don't pop Molly, I rock Tom Ford." (Rough translation: Fashion is my fun club drug!)

The rapper revealed there'd be a song titled after Tom on his album's tracklist, but the song didn't drop until a limited release on July 4.

"Spent all my euros on tuxes and weird clothes," Jay-Z says on "Tom Ford." Hear the rest of the catchy track below, or over on Perez Hilton. What do you think of Tom's big hip-hop shout-out?

Kayaking for Newbies: Utah Edition - Sport Chalet Blog | I'd rather be...

    kayaks_water

So kayaking has caught your interest. Now what? I decided to visit the Sports Chalet in West Jordan, Utah, and ask some questions on this popular sport. Jamie Gill, the assistant manager and a former white water guide, provided me with his expert advice and some top tips on what a newbie kayaker needs to know.

First things first; what kind of kayak does a newbie need?

There are a lot of basic kayaks from recreational to touring, which aren?t going to be too much for a newbie kayaker to handle, Gill says. These are not the type of kayaks you?re going to be taking out on the white rapids, though. These kayaks are intended for what?s called a flat float, or still water. Recreational kayaks are not going to be able to take the same beating as a white water kayak option would. To get started, Gill recommends first deciding what kind of kayaking you?ll be doing. Are you going to be out leisurely enjoying the lake with family or friends, or do you have the need for speed and want the rush of rapids.

    Paddle On

The next thing on your list is finding the right paddle. The touring and recreation type kayaks come with three different sized paddles. The options are a 2/20, a 2/30 and a 2/40. The 2/20 is good for shorter kayaks and smaller people, while the 2/30 and 2/40 tend to be better for taller people, and people possibly doing some long distance kayaking.

    Appropriate Kayaking Apparel

Gill says, start with sunscreen! Make sure you take all the sun protection you can. Polarized sunglasses work really well, because they prevent the glare from the water and you?ll probably want a hat. Getting wet is part of the plan, so you?ll also want a long sleeve quick dry shirt. Gill recommends something synthetic, and even says going with a piece that has a UPF in it is a great idea. A good pair of quick dry swim trunks is a must and you?ll definitely want a great water sandal. You won?t want to use a heavy wetsuit. The function of a wetsuit is to use the water that?s trapped inside to keep you warm and since you aren?t fully immersed in the water, ?you?ll bake before you?ll freeze,? Gill says. You want to keep your apparel lightweight.

    Kayak with Kids

When purchasing a kayak for a child, Gill recommends buying the 6 ft. kayak built for children ages 10-12. Children any younger should not be using their own kayak. Kids wanting to ride along can easily do so with an adult in a two-person kayak. Since the single seat and double seat recreational and touring kayaks are the same size, you won?t be paddling that much harder with a child on board.

    Picking a PFD

Aside from the kayak and the paddle, a personal flotation device is a kayaking essential. Using the term life jacket is no longer the norm, because a life jacket doesn?t necessarily save your life; it?s meant to assist you in what you?re doing to stay afloat. A good rule to follow is: as soon as the water is ankle deep, get a pfd on. You never know what?s going on under the surface of the water, whether it?s rocks or entrapments. There are specific pfd?s for kayakers that are wider in the shoulders so as not to constrict you while you?re trying to paddle. They?re also not as bulky as some of the other water sport options.

Getting Your Kayak From Here to There

Roof racks that are kayak and canoe specific are the way to go! If you don?t want to get into an advanced roof rack system, there are more economical foam kayak rack systems. They allow the kayak to nest inside and you simply tighten with a few straps. There are a number of different options, from a full roof rack system to something simpler, depending on your specific needs.

Great Starter Locations for Newbies in the Salt Lake Area

Newbie kayakers have some great lakes to choose from. The Jordan River is a nice flat float and there are some really good sections on it for beginners. As far as lake kayaking goes, Gill advises going to Little Dell Reservoir up East Canyon. They don?t allow motorized boats, so somebody that might be a little anxious about motorized boats coming around while they?re trying to learn, wouldn?t need to worry about that.

    Timing Your Kayaking Adventure

What?s the best time of time to go kayaking? ?Boy, anytime of day,? Gill says with a smile. He says early morning and early evening are good. But, if you don?t mind the heat, mid-afternoon is good as well. If you are planning on going after dark, it?s a good idea to get to know the boating laws in the area.

    The Peaceful Way to Exercise

One thing?s for sure, you?re going to get a workout. ?I used to be a pretty skinny kid when I was out guiding,? Gill reminisced. It?s a great arm workout and can be great cardio depending on the distance you?re going. You also do a lot of side-to-side movement, which is great for tightening your core. What better way to workout, then out on a peaceful lake rowing!

Popes John Paul II, John XXIII to be made saints: Vatican

    By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul II, the globe-trotting pontiff who led the Catholic Church for nearly 27 years, and Pope John XXIII, who called the reforming Second Vatican Council, will be declared saints, the Vatican said on Friday.

The Vatican said Pope Francis had approved a second miracle attributed to John Paul, a Pole who was elected in 1978 as the first non-Italian pope in 450 years and died in 2005. His progression to sainthood is the fastest in modern times.

The Vatican also said Pope John XXIII, who reigned from 1958 to 1963 and called the 1962-1965 Second Vatican Council - which enacted sweeping reforms to modernize the Church - would be made a saint even though he has only been credited with one miracle since his death.

The canonization ceremonies, which are likely to bring hundreds of thousands to people to Rome, are expected this year.

John Paul had already been credited with asking God to cure a French nun of Parkinson's disease, the same malady he had, before he was beatified in 2011.

Two confirmed miracles are usually required under Vatican rules for the declaration of a saint.

The second miracle attributed to his intercession is the inexplicable curing of a Costa Rican woman who prayed to him for help with her medical condition on the day of his beatification.

In the case of Pope John XXIII, who was known as the "good pope", Francis waived the customary rules requiring a second miracle after beatification, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said. John XXIII was beatified in 2000.

Francis, who has tried to instill a spirit of simplicity and reform in the Church since his election in March, is known to have great admiration for the reforming Pope John, who was born of peasant stock in northern Italy.

John Paul went down in history as the "globe-trotting pope," visiting every inhabited continent in more than 100 trips outside Italy.

    LAST DAYS WATCHED BY WORLD

His struggle with ill health was watched by millions around the world on television towards the end of his life.

He was also credited with being instrumental in the fall of communism in Eastern Europe in 1989 because of his steadfast defense of the Solidarity trade union in his native Poland.

After martial law was declared in Poland in 1981, he is believed to have told then-Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev that if Russia invaded Poland, he would return home.

John Paul was nearly killed by Turkish gunman Mehmet Ali Agca, who shot him in St Peter's Square on May 13, 1981. Two trials failed to prove Italian magistrates' accusations that the Bulgarian secret services had carried out the plot with Agca on behalf of the Soviet Union.

Millions of people attended his funeral in April, 2005, and many cried "Santo Subito" or "Make him a saint immediately".

His successor, Benedict, waived a Church rule that normally requires a five-year waiting period before the preliminaries to sainthood can even begin.

John Paul is respected by Jews because of his 1986 visit to Rome's synagogue, the first by a pope to a Jewish temple.

He is already considered a saint by millions of his countrymen in Poland, having supported their bid for freedom on the world stage for 11 years before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

"I am so happy and hardly can wait. John Paul II was one of a kind," said Ewa Jezierska, 72, a Polish saleswoman in Warsaw.

Liberals in the Church say John Paul was too harsh with theological dissenters who wanted to help the poor, particularly in Latin America. Others say he should be held ultimately responsible for sexual abuse scandals because they occurred or came to light when he was in charge.

John Paul also drew criticism for supporting the late Father Marcial Maciel, the Mexican founder of the Legionaries of Christ religious order, defending him despite charges of sexual abuse that later turned out to be true.

John XXIII has for decades been venerated by Italians who recall his kind gestures. While he was pope for less than five years, his short pontificate coincided with the post-World War Two "economic miracle" that transformed Italy from a devastated agricultural backwater to an international economic power.

Samsung sells 20 million Galaxy S 4s according to Korean Media

    Samsung Galaxy S 4 review

So, JK Shin hasn't emerged from Samsung's HQ declaring that his company has sold 20 million Galaxy S 4s, but the day (and week) is still young. Korea's news media is quoting the CEO as saying that Samsung's flagship Jay-Z player / handset has seen its sales double from the 10 million that was announced at the tail-end of May. Given that we're but a few days away from the company's next earnings estimates, we'll probably find out for certain soon enough.

The Invisible Electronic Fields That Surround Your MacBook

You might view your laptop as a nice, neatly contained unit?but there's more bursting out of it than meets the eye. In fact, all of its electrical components create complex magnetic and electric fields that spread far and wide, and this video shows you their reach.

A project by Luke Sturgeon and Shamik Ray from the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design, this video tries to visualize the electromagnetic fields emitted by electronic devices using light painting. The pair explain:

We chose to make Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) that surround us visible. EMFs are particularly strong around devices with electrical and magnetic parts. Using long exposure photography and stop-frame animation we tried to ?light-paint? the EMF around objects like our laptops and an old tape-deck. Through a series of experiments in photographic and lighting techniques followed by hacking up an Android phone to act as an EMF indicator and then coding our own app in Processing we were able to visualize how these fields change over objects.

The phone was used as a kind of light brush, which reacted to the changing strength of the EMF, and long exposures allowed them to capture the whole field. Amusingly, the EMF from the laptop's hard drive was strong enough to stall the phone?s magnetic sensor?so there's still room for improvement?but the result is pretty cool nonetheless. Teens' self-consciousness linked with specific brain, physiological responses

July 2, 2013 ? Teenagers are famously self-conscious, acutely aware and concerned about what their peers think of them. A new study reveals that this self-consciousness is linked with specific physiological and brain responses that seem to emerge and peak in adolescence.

"Our study identifies adolescence as a unique period of the lifespan in which self-conscious emotion, physiological reactivity, and activity in specific brain areas converge and peak in response to being evaluated by others," says psychological scientist and lead researcher Leah Somerville of Harvard University.

The findings, published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, suggest that teens' sensitivity to social evaluation might be explained by shifts in physiological and brain function during adolescence, in addition to the numerous sociocultural changes that take place during the teen years.

Somerville and colleagues wanted to investigate whether just being looked at -- a minimal social-evaluation situation -- might register with greater importance, arousal, and intensity for adolescents than for either children or adults. The researchers hypothesized that late-developing regions of the brain, such as the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), could play a unique role in the way teens monitor these types of social evaluative contexts.

The researchers had 69 participants, ranging in age from 8 to almost 23 years old, come to the lab and complete measures that gauged emotional, physiological, and neural responses to social evaluation.

They told the participants that they would be testing a new video camera embedded in the head coil of a functional MRI scanner. The participants watched a screen indicating whether the camera was "off," "warming up," or "on," and were told that a same-sex peer of about the same age would be watching the video feed and would be able to see them when the camera was on. In reality, there was no camera in the MRI machine.

The consistency and strength of the resulting data took the researchers by surprise: "We were concerned about whether simply being looked at was a strong enough 'social evaluation' to evoke emotional, physiological and neural responses," says Somerville. "Our findings suggest that being watched, and to some extent anticipating being watched, were sufficient to elicit self-conscious emotional responses at each level of measurement."

Specifically, participants' self-reported embarrassment, physiological arousal, and MPFC activation showed reactivity to social evaluation that seemed to converge and peak during adolescence.

Adolescent participants also showed increased functional connectivity between the MPFC and striatum, an area of the brain that mediates motivated behaviors and actions. Somerville and colleagues speculate that the MPFC-striatum pathway may be a route by which social evaluative contexts influence behavior. The link may provide an initial clue as to why teens often engage in riskier behaviors when they're with their peers.

Gay, lesbian couples rush to wed in Calif.

Jubilant gay and lesbian couples flocked to city halls and county courthouses across California on Monday to wed with pets, siblings and kids in tow as same-sex marriages resumed across the state following a five-year legal hiatus.

Monday was the first chance for all but a handful of the state's same-sex couples to wed since 2008, when about 18,000 marriages went forward during a brief legal window before a voter-approved ban.

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to rule on the constitutional merits of that ban ? called Proposition 8 ? and a lower court on Friday said same-sex marriages could resume. On Sunday, Justice Anthony Kennedy rejected a last-ditch appeal.

While a few lucky couples were able to score marriage licenses before government offices closed and wed late Friday and scores of others tied the knot at San Francisco City Hall over the weekend, Monday was the day many couples had been awaiting for years.

The Los Angeles County clerk-recorder's office logged more than 600 online marriage license applications over the weekend ? more than five times the normal amount ? and posted extended hours Monday and Tuesday to deal with the crush.

In West Hollywood, where about 40 percent of the population is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, the City Council was deputized to perform nuptials. Free shuttles ran from court to near City Hall.

Twenty couples were married within the first 45 minutes Monday and a line grew throughout the morning.

In the smaller, rural counties, the scene was more subdued but joyous.

In Shasta County, one couple wed before 9 a.m., said County Clerk Cathy Darling Allen, but the county will perform same-sex weddings on an as-needed basis to supplement its regular twice weekly ceremonies for couples.

In Tulare County, fewer than a dozen couples showed up to get marriage licenses, said Julie Poochigian, the county's Chief Deputy Clerk-Recorder.

Though ceremonies were taking place throughout the state, gay marriage opponents say they still believe that marriage is between a man and a woman.

"From a church perspective, we're going to stick to our guns," said the Rev. Chris Clark, pastor of the East Clairemont Baptist Church in San Diego. "God's design for marriage hasn't changed. It's one man, one woman."

In Sacramento, opponents were less visible Monday than during the lengthy legal saga. Fewer than a dozen protesters gathered outside the clerk-recorder's office holding large signs that read "GOD has ruled on marriage" and "Marriage=1 Man+1 Woman." One man shouted at couples through a bullhorn. The protesters left by midmorning.

    ___

    DOGS IN TUXEDOS

SANTA ANA, Calif. ? Mary Darby and Tracy Scofield showed up at the courthouse three times last week for a marriage license, but each time they were told applications for same-sex couples were still on hold or the court was closed.

On Monday, they made sure they were first in line.

Darby, a 26-year-old emergency medical technician, and Scofield, a 42-year-old elementary school teacher, pitched lawn chairs outside the historic brick building before 6 a.m. and waited with their two tuxedo-clad Chihuahua-terrier mixes.

Binks and Pepito weren't allowed inside for the ceremony, but Darby and Scofield were thrilled to be the first same-sex couple married in the county since 2008.

"It feels amazing, absolutely amazing," Darby said.

The couple met while bowling two years ago and had planned to tie the knot in New York, which is Darby's home state and where same-sex marriage was already legal. The chance to wed in California, however, was too much to pass up.

After exchanging tearful "I dos" in front of a simple wooden altar adorned with fake flowers, the newlyweds posed for photos with other gay and lesbian couples and their mutts.

    Then they headed for Disneyland.

    HELPING OUT OTHERS

FRESNO, Calif. ? Susan Stewart has legally married her same-sex partner twice ? once in Canada and once in California. So when gay marriages resumed in California, Stewart was there to support others doing the same.

The second-grade teacher stood in the shade outside the county clerk's office and handed out pretzel wedding favors (tied in knots), frosted cupcakes and ? most importantly ? bottled water to couples on a blazing day expected to reach 111 degrees.

Stewart, who wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the word "Equalifornia," said she and her partner were among the couples who rushed to marry in 2008.

She said the new crop of brides and grooms seems older, more mature and in less of a hurry.

"There was a lot more urgency back in 2008, there was a rush to get married," said Stewart, 36, who has two young children with her wife. "This time, it's more steady. This is the law; this is how it's going to be from now on."

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. ? Wanda Lawson, 63, and Lauryne Braithwaite, 65, met 32 years ago at a technical college and have been together ever since ? but they didn't get organized in time to wed in 2008.

The two were among the first to take advantage of free ceremonies all day Monday in West Hollywood, where the City Council was deputized to conduct weddings.

A free bus service shuttled beaming couples between the Beverly Hills courthouse, where they got a marriage license, and West Hollywood for the ceremonies.

"It's exciting," Lawson said. "We've laughed. We've cried. To be made equal is a wonderful thing."

Wearing rainbow leis, the two walked arm-in-arm down the sidewalk with the marriage certificate tucked in a manila envelope.

Braithwaite, a retired transit employee, said she felt married already, but went through the ceremony because it was important to Lawson.

"I don't need a piece of paper to say that you're mine," she said, turning to Lawson.

    IMMIGRATION IMPLICATIONS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? The chance to marry was especially meaningful for Jay and Juan Carlos Redden, who met seven years ago in Juan Carlos' native Costa Rica.

The couple arrived shortly after the Sacramento clerk's office opened Monday and said the brief ceremony will finally allow Jay Redden to petition immigration officials on behalf of his spouse, who traveled to the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2006, decided to stay with Redden and never left.

The two decided against marrying in 2008 out of fear that Juan Carlos might have been deported.

Now, they are planning a big celebration in November to mark the anniversary of Juan Carlos' arrival in the U.S. and their life together.

Redden, 48, said he had some jitters heading into the ceremony but he wasn't bothered by the same-sex marriage opponents outside the office.

"There's still going to be a lot of legal challenges, but I think this issue in fairly short order will be a thing of the past," he said.
