96% Pariah

"Pariah," from first-time writer/director Dee Rees, doesn't break much artistic ground. It tells the same gay/lesbian coming-out story that we've seen a million times. But it's told particularly well and from within a black urban context, which I don't believe has been done before. It also goes a bit deeper into the hearts and minds of the homophobic parents than typically is done, which was great. Unfortunately, it only scratches those surfaces. Kim Wayans, who of course has a long history in comedy, shows she has major dramatic talent, playing the homophobic mother of the main character. The cast is universally good, but Wayans is the stand-out. The main character is a black teenage girl in Brooklyn going through the coming-out process. She has fully come out to herself as a lesbian, and she has even found her way into a lesbian circle of friends. She even frequents a women's night club. But she hasn't told Mom or Dad about any of this, both of whom are homophobic. Mom is particularly venomous in her hatred of gays and lesbians. You can see that Dad, a detective in the NYPD, in his heart of hearts is not a bigot. Thrown into the mix to complicate things a little bit is a bisexual girl eager to have lesbian experiences to explore herself. But she tosses lesbians aside like useless candy wrappers after she's had her fun. If I were going to give Dee Rees advice, I would say this: Ms. Rees, in "Pariah" you started digging into the parent characters with some real psychological and artistic depth. I encourage you to go more deeply in that direction. I think your true gifts as an artist lie there. I would give anything to see a sequel where you explore what happened to that mother and what she's really fighting. You hint that her husband is beginning to stray, but I think there's more in there. Help us see it. Remember when that great schoolteacher tells Alike that she could "go deeper" with her poetry? You could go deeper with your films. I know you could.

What the new reproductive treatments mean for families and society

In Vitro Fertilization [IVF] and the related technologies of assisted reproduction are no longer experimental procedures. In some European countries as many as 4% of all babies born are conceived by IVF, and in every kindergarten classroom there will no doubt be at least one IVF child. Assisted reproduction is the solution to today's epidemic of infertility. BABY-MAKING: What the New Reproductive Treatments Mean for Families and Society by Bart Fauser and Paul Devroey (Oxford | March 15, 2012), describes the many fertility techniques now used to help infertile couples have a baby.

In BABY-MAKING two of the world's leading authorities present a detailed and readable account of assisted reproduction, describing how this technique is applied to help infertile couples have a baby. Fauser and Devroey describe the latest technologies, placing them in their scientific and clinical settings, outlining such procedures as IVF, sperm injection techniques, egg donation, fertility preservation, single embryo transfer, and reproductive surgery. Fauser and Devroey also discuss fertility treatments in patients who are not infertile (such as single women or lesbians). One of the great controversies swirling around assisted reproduction is the furor over "designer babies" (manipulating genetic material to produce babies with blue eyes or a high IQ, or of a particular sex), but the authors contend that the only acceptable aim in "designing" a baby is to insure a safe pregnancy and delivery. BABY-MAKING also reveals that a key challenge of fertility research is to perfect a treatment that avoids multiple pregnancy, a trend that has blighted IVF throughout its thirty-year history. Fauser and Devroey also discuss the issue of increasing age-related infertility ("the infertility epidemic") and the possible use of IVF to meet this challenge and improve birth rates. The final chapter looks to the future and proposes that the limits to assisted reproduction will be set more by ethical considerations than by scientific progress.

Topics for discussion include:

  • A new, responsible definition of 'designer babies'
  • The science-based claim that multiple pregnancy is the scourge of IVFtwins are not the ideal outcome
  • Embryo selection explained: pre-implantation genetic diagnosis [PGD] is not intended to guarantee eye color or selected gender
  • The perils of delayed parenthood
  • Considers the wider social questions about fertility treatment; can fertility treatment be promoted as a population policy in countries with a critically declining birth rate? Should embryo research be controlled by law? Are governments better equipped to regulate treatment than doctors?

Network Security for a Business or Organization | Best network ...

? Network Security for a Business or Organization On a personal level, network security may be no more than installing antivirus software and checking firewall settings. For a business or organization, however, effective network security goes far beyond these basics and is part of business continuity planning. An intruder entering a company?s network can steal and eventually exploit data or disable a system. rather than take a risk every time your employees get on the internet, make sure your company?s network security policy is comprehensive and involves risk assessment and management.Network security encompasses a system?s usability, reliability, integrity, and safety and addresses outside and internal threats. because both large and small businesses are affected by hackers and other online criminals, a multilayered network security policy for hardware and software must be in place. Aside from protecting your data, network security is required by industry regulations, including FFIEC and GLBA for finance and HIPAA for healthcare. If your company?s network security policy is not effective or up to date, what can happen? Credit cards, medical records, or other personal data stored in an electronic information system can be stolen and exploited, especially through identity theft. Your business, as a result, ends up losing customers, faces lawsuits, and does not comply with industry standards.Hackers and online criminals are constantly developing new security threats. However, the threats, no matter how powerful, fall into one of the following categories:? Viruses and worms ? malware that enters a system through malicious code from an attachment.? Trojan horses ? malware embedded on a website that can be difficult to expunge.? Phishing ? a ruse to obtain username and password information through authentic-seeming websites, emails, or telephone calls. Phishing emails and websites often mimic those from banks or PayPal.? Pack sniffers ? monitors that enter a system to capture and scan data for usernames and passwords.? Zombie computers ? spam emitted from a network device. the excessive spam disables a network, allowing an intruder to enter easily and steal data.Regular network assessments must be part of your company?s IT security policy. such assessments involve penetration tests, social engineering, vulnerability scans, and other system examination in order to find weak points in which an intruder can enter. Thorough scanning addresses external and internal vulnerabilities. A network security professional conducting the scan will provide a report of all findings and offer solutions for fixing them.No related entry, please use the search box above.

Circumcision may help protect against prostate cancer | Science ...

A new analysis led by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has found that circumcision before a male's first sexual intercourse may help protect against prostate cancer. Published early online in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study suggests that circumcision can hinder infection and inflammation that may lead to this malignancy.

Infections are known to cause cancer, and research suggests that sexually transmitted infections may contribute to the development of prostate cancer. Also, certain sexually transmitted infections can be prevented by circumcision. Therefore, it stands to reason that circumcision should protect against the development of some cases of prostate cancer. This is what lead author Jonathan L. Wright, MD, an affiliate investigator in the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division, and his colleagues set out to test.

For their study, the investigators analyzed information from 3,399 men (1,754 with prostate cancer and 1,645 without). Men who had been circumcised before their first sexual intercourse were 15 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer than uncircumcised men. This reduced risk applied for both less aggressive and more aggressive cancers. (Specifically, men circumcised before their first sexual intercourse had a 12 percent reduced risk for developing less aggressive prostate cancer and an 18 percent reduced risk for developing more aggressive prostate cancer.)

Sexually transmitted infections may lead to prostate cancer by causing chronic inflammation that creates a hospitable environment for cancer cells. Other mechanisms may also be involved. Circumcision may protect against sexually transmitted infections, and therefore prostate cancer, by toughening the inner foreskin and by getting rid of the moist space under the foreskin that may help pathogens survive.

"These data are in line with an infectious/inflammatory pathway which may be involved in the risk of prostate cancer in some men," said Dr. Wright, who is also an assistant professor of urology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. "Although observational only, these data suggest a biologically plausible mechanism through which circumcision may decrease the risk of prostate cancer. Future research of this relationship is warranted," he added.

Base of suspect in Afghanistan killings had been called 'most troubled' in military

JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. - Joint Base Lewis-McChord is one of the largest military installations in the U.S., and one that has seen its share of controversies and violence in the past few years.

The news that a soldier suspected of killing 16 Afghan villagers Sunday comes from this base about 45 miles south of Seattle hit hard.

"It's another blow to this community," said Spc. Jared Richardson, an engineer, as he stood outside a barbershop near the base. "This is definitely something we don't need."

Home to about 100,000 military and civilian personnel, the base has suffered a spate of suicides among soldiers back from war. The Army is investigating whether doctors at Lewis-McChord's Madigan Army Medical Center were urged to consider the cost of providing benefits when reviewing diagnoses of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Most famously, four Lewis-McChord soldiers were convicted in the deliberate thrill killings of three Afghan civilians in 2010.

The military newspaper Stars and Stripes called it "the most troubled base in the military" that year.

Catherine Caruso, a spokeswoman for Lewis-McChord, said she could not comment on reports that the soldier involved in Sunday's shooting was based there.

A U.S. official speaking on the condition of anonymity told The Associated Press that the shooter was a conventional soldier assigned to support a special operations unit of either Green Berets or Navy SEALs engaged in a village stability operation. He was a sergeant, married with two children, who had served three tours in Iraq and began his first deployment to Afghanistan in December, according to a senior U.S. official.

It wasn't immediately clear if the soldier was with Lewis-McChord's 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, which sent about 2,500 soldiers to Afghanistan in December for a yearlong deployment. The brigade had deployed to Iraq three times since 2003; this is its first deployment to Afghanistan.

Lewis-McChord, a sprawling complex of red brick buildings, training fields and forests, has grown quickly since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Officials there have said that any community the size of the base is bound to have its problems, and its reputation has been tarred by "a small number of highly visible but isolated episodes" that don't accurately reflect the remarkable accomplishments of its service members, including their work overseas and the creation of new programs to support returning soldiers.

The controversies have indeed been highly visible.

In 2010, a dozen soldiers from the base were arrested on a slew of charges that ranged from using drugs, beating up a whistleblower in their unit, and deliberately killing three Afghan civilians during patrols in Kandahar Province. Prosecutors at Lewis-McChord won convictions against four of the five who were charged in the killings.

After the first killing, the father of one of the soldiers called Lewis-McChord to report it ? and to say that more killings were planned. The staff sergeant who took the call didn't report it to anyone else, saying he didn't have the authority to begin an investigation in a war zone. By the time the suspects were arrested months later, two more civilians were dead.

Army Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs, of Billings, Mont., the highest ranking defendant, was sentenced to life in prison. At his seven-day court martial at Lewis-McChord, Gibbs acknowledged cutting fingers off corpses and yanking out a victim's tooth to keep as war trophies, "like keeping the antlers off a deer you'd shoot."

There have been other episodes of violence involving the base's soldiers or former soldiers. A former soldier shot and injured a Salt Lake City police officer in 2010; he died when police returned fire.

On Jan. 1, a 24-year-old Iraq war veteran shot and killed a Mount Rainier National Park ranger before succumbing to the cold and drowning in a creek.

Last year, Lewis-McChord saw more suicides than ever before ? 12, up from 9 in each of the prior two years. The Army has seen more suicides at bases across the country since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began.

The toll at Lewis-McChord rose despite new efforts to counsel soldiers when they come home from war, including the creation of a suicide-prevention office.

In the past five years, about 300 patients at Madigan Army Medical Center at the base had their PTSD diagnoses reversed by a forensic psychiatry team, The Seattle Times reported this month. The Army is reviewing whether those doctors were influenced by how much a PTSD diagnosis can cost, in terms of a pension and other benefits.

At Coffee Strong, a coffee shop near the base that doubles as a resource center for soldiers seeking to leave the Army, executive director Jorge Gonzalez said he was not surprised the shooter was from the base.

"Joint Base Lewis McChord has been bombarded with bad stories," said Gonzales, who served in the Army in Iraq in 2006. "We're not seeing the true costs of war, we're seeing soldiers committing suicide ... murder and domestic violence."

Richardson said the vast majority of the tens of thousands of soldiers at the base were professionals. Richardson, who found out about the killings during breakfast with friends who are soldiers, worried the incident would put "sisters and brothers in arms" in "harm's way."

"It's unfortunate that these things keeping ending up at Joint Base Lewis-McChord," he said. "We're not vigilantes. We're soldiers."

Armenia Real Estate Investment: Ever increasing Prospects!

The fantastic citizens, wealthy history as well as appealing views, together with the incredibly economical property rates make Armenia real estate a profitable project for international real estate traders.

Armenia, a land-shut hilly region in South Caucasus is positioned between the the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. With their capital at Yerevan, the country experiences continental type of environment having sunny and also dry winter months together with lower dampness levels. The majority of the real estate in Armenia have been privatized as soon as the freedom of the nation in the early 1990?s. However, the real estate which weren?t privatized at this point are usually posted inside of the Privatization ministry.

At the moment, the laws relating to Armenia real estate is pretty open-handed. Even worldwide real estate speculators can purchase apartments along with workplaces throughout the nation, or pick Armenia rental properties and also lease properties for a condition of 99 years. Other than this, the regionally registered companies as well as overseas citizens of Armenian descent possess the ability to invest in land in the state.

The metropolis of Yerevan is quite centralized and comprises of the most expensive real estate in Armenia, accompanied by nearby cities for instance Ashtarak and Ejmiatsin, and also other cities and towns like Vanadzor, Dilijan and Gyumri. Throughout other places of the nation, the property can be purchased at very inexpensive rates that an individual can purchase for a cost that will be similar to a free home.

The Armenia real estate pricing are already experiencing a sudden boost in recent years. Within the main city, the costs have rocketed during the last Five years. Currently, fantastic real estate are available with a price of Two Thousand Dollars for every square meter. At this rate, an apartment pertaining to typical dimension is obtainable for a cost of two hundred thousand dollars. Remaining essentially the most attractive region within the whole region, this cost isn?t accepted as not affordable.

The Armenia real estate buying formula has also experienced quite a few liberalizations during the past few years, due to that purchasing real estate throughout Armenia is becoming a lot simpler. According to the legal system of the particular nation, one should employ a local attorney at law that will help with the buys and also paperwork of real estate. Foreign real estate traders who want to invest in properties or even condominiums throughout Armenia either can rent the land for 99 years, or even build an Armenia based corporation and acquire the stretch of land by means of it. Almost all of the Armenia real estate businesses will allow you to set up a corporation for a small charge.

Buying real estate throughout Armenia is usually possibly not the foremost preference of people from various areas of the whole world. However, this mindset of the folks is slowly transforming because of the understanding that Armenia is an economical and also really worth-dwelling land for those who would like to stay in there. The crime rates in the state is actually negligible, as well as the properties and apartments that happen to be usually readily available in extremely affordable. Also, the increasingly security of the nation causes it to look like the stipulations are not likely to deteriorate within any time in the future.

Debt Relief | Greek Debt Relief To Trigger Bond Insurance Payout ...

March 10, 2012 ? 1:01 am

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The agency that oversees financial derivatives says a massive debt relief deal for Greece constitutes a so-called credit event , meaning it will trigger payouts on bond insurance.

The International Swaps and Derivatives Association said Friday that its determinations committee ?resolved unanimously that a Restructuring Credit Event has occurred with respect to The Hellenic Republic.?

That means holders of credit default swaps on Greek bonds will be able to claim insurance payments as a result of Greece?s decision to force its debt holders into a bond swap.

There had been fears that the payout of such insurance could spark a cascade of losses for banks and other important investment funds.

But ISDA has said that overall payouts on CDS linked to Greek bonds will be less than $3.2 billion, relieving fears that they could fell a big financial firm.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP?s earlier story is below.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece?s private creditors agreed Friday to take cents on the euro in the biggest debt writedown in history, paving the way for an enormous second bailout to keep the Europe ?s economy from being dragged further into chaos.

Greece would have risked defaulting on its debts in two weeks without the agreement, sparking turmoil in the financial markets and sending shock waves through the other 16 countries that use the euro.

Prime Minister Lucas Papdemos called the deal an important ?historic success? in a televised address to the nation Friday night. ?For the first time, Greece is not adding but taking debt off the backs of its citizens.?

The country said 83.5 percent of private investors holding its government debt had agreed to a bond swap, taking a cut in more than half the face value of their investments with softer repayment terms for Greece. The radical swap aimed to put the country?s debt-ridden economy on the road to recovery, and was a key condition to secure a

euro130 billion ($172 billion) rescue package from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund.

Charles Dallara, the managing director of the Institute of International Finance, which negotiated the deal with the Greek government on large investors? behalf, described the bond swap as ?the largest ever? restructuring.

?This has been painful and the pain is not over yet. But I now cam see light at the end of the tunnel for the Greek economy,? Dallara told Greece?s Mega television. He estimated Greece could return to the markets ?within a few years? and said that if recovery continues, ?I think the risk for Greece and the risk on the eurozone will be very manageable.?

The Fitch ratings agency downgraded Greece to ?restricted default? over the bond swap ? a move that had been expected. Fitch was the third agency to downgrade Greece into default, after Moody?s and Standard Poor?s. The agencies are expected to raise the country?s credit rating after the completion of the swap.

Of the investors holding the euro177 billion ($234 billion) in bonds governed by Greek law, 85.8 percent joined. The deadline for those holding foreign-law bonds was extended to March 23.

Creditors holding Greek-law bonds who refused to sign up will be forced into the deal; the Cabinet approved the activation of legislation known as ?collective action clauses? on Friday.

Finance ministers from the 17-nation eurozone said Greece had fulfilled the conditions to get approval for the bailout next week. The IMF has set a tentative date of March 15 to discuss the size of its participation.

The ministers, who discussed the issue in a conference call Friday, also released up to euro35.5 billion ($47 billion) in bailout money to fund the debt swap. Investors exchanging bonds will receive up to euro30 billion ? or 15 percent of the remaining money they are owed ? as a sweetener for the deal and euro5.5 billion for outstanding interest payments.

European leaders hailed the deal as a seminal moment in their effort to stem the crisis and get Greece on its feet.

?The page of the financial crisis is being turned,? said French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

And Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos told Parliament Friday: ?I believe everyone will soon realize that this is the only way to keep the country on its feet and give it a second historic chance that it needs.?

?A window of opportunity is opening? to reduce the country?s euro368 billion debt by euro105 billion, or about 50 percentage points of gross domestic product, he said.

However, some economists are concerned that Greece is merely buying time. The breather allows European governments and banks to strengthen their financial defenses, leaving them less vulnerable if Greece eventually cracks.

The deal and expected bailout do ?more to protect Europe from Greece than for Greece itself,? said Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, research fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics .

Europe also has to contend with spiraling debt problems of Spain, Portugal and Ireland and Italy.

Markets, which had rallied on Thursday on expectations of a successful deal, were muted on Friday. The Stoxx 50 of leading European shares was up 0.6 percent, but the main stock index in Athens closed down 2.15 percent. The euro retreated 1.19 percent from recent highs to $1.3110.

The International Swaps and Derivatives Association was meeting to determine whether the bond swap would be deemed a so-called ?credit event? ? a technical default ? which would trigger the payment of credit default swaps, which is essentially insurance against a default.

When the debt relief plan was first announced last year, eurozone leaders and the European Central Bank worked hard to avoid a credit event because they feared the a payout of credit default swaps could destabilize big financial institutions that sold them.

However, since then a credit default swap payout has started to look less threatening. The ISDA, a private organization that rules on credit events, said that if triggered, overall payouts on CDS linked to Greece will be below $3.2 billion.

On the streets of Athens, however, many were skeptical about the deal and pessimistic about the future. Panayiotis Theodoropoulos said the writedown was good ?for them.?

?For us? Nothing. Everyone looks out for themselves. In a while the people will be living on the streets,? he said.

The debt crisis, sparked by years of overspending and waste, has left Greece relying on funds from international rescue loans since May 2010. Austerity measures including repeated salary and pension cuts and tax hikes have led to record unemployment with more than 1 million people out of work, a fifth of the labor force.

The country released statistics Friday showing the recession in the last quarter of 2011 was deeper than initially forecast, reaching 7.5 percent instead of 7 percent. The economy is expected to shrink for a fifth straight year in 2012, stagnate in 2013 and modestly expand in 2014.

Nicholas Paphitis and Demetris Nellas in Athens, Gabriele Steinhauser in Brussels and Geir Moulson in Berlin contributed to this report.

ARTICLES MANIAC ? Consider These Tips If Your Toddler Is ...

While it can be embarrassing, frustrating, and sometimes frightening, for the most part, this type of behavior by toddlers is a normal phase that they all pass through. This usually results from a frustration at not being able to express themselves, whether it?s wanting a toy or wanting your attention, and it?s also a part of their growth development.

Even though this phase can hit anywhere 14 months and up, it can be more noticeable when the child is exposed to others such as in a social setting or even in a childcare center. Even children who are linguistically advanced for their ages, are still children, and will be prone to the same frustrations as others.

Not overreacting is the first rule of thumb you should follow. While there are different schools of thought on spanking, this is not a situation where it is appropriate, and can only add fuel to the fire. A time-out is in order, generally about two minutes worth on a chair where they can?t stomp on the floor, or kick anything. You will also be given a chance to calm down because of this. You can explain when you sit them down that this time-out is because they have bit/hit/kicked someone and that is not allowed but during time-out, do not speak to them.

Explain to them once more when the time is up that because it hurts other people, then that behavior is not acceptable. A toddler is unlikely to be able to relate cause and effect then apply it to themselves which is why it?s not of much use to ask them how they would feel if someone bit them. But a non-confrontational ?punishment?, and explanation, tells them what they did wrong, and what will happen if they do it again.

If they go right out and repeat the action, take them back for another time-out. It would depend on the age of the child but what you can do is explain the concept of apologies and why they should make one. You should use positive reinforcement if they go right out and give their toy to the child that they kicked or praise them if they gave an apology, even if it comes with a kiss.

Analysts: Prosecutors' case strong in Rutgers trial

By msnbc.com staff and news services

John O'boyle / AP

Dharun Ravi attends his trial at the Middlesex County Courthouse in New Brunswick, N.J.

NEW BRUNSWICK , N.J. -- Prosecutors built a better than expected case before resting Thursday in the trial of a former Rutgers University student accused of using a webcam to spy on a gay sexual encounter of his roommate who later committed suicide, legal experts say.

While prosecutors set a high bar for the defense starting Friday of Dharun Ravi, 20, two pivotal charges of invasion of privacy and bias intimidation remain hard to prove, the analysts told msnbc.com.

Ravi's roommate at Rutgers, Tyler Clementi, 18, killed himself on Sept. 22, 2010, after learning Ravi covertly saw him kissing another man, according to court testimony.

?The defense has an extremely large burden; the prosecution put on a good case,? said Edward Weinstein, an East Brunswick, N.J., criminal and family law attorney closely following the trial. Before the trial started, Weinstein was quoted in several media reports as saying the prosecutor's case might be weak.

Weinstein said Thursday that among facts that first came out to the public during the trial were Ravi?s tweets showing ?he was not just a mischievous kid pulling a prank? by expressing distaste for Clementi?s homosexuality and inviting people to a online viewing party of Ravi?s encounter.

?The outcome totally remains to be seen,? he said.

The defense, he predicted, will not be able to ask for a dismissal.

?What will be extremely interesting is whether they put the defendant on the stand,? Weinstein said.

Ravi faces 15 counts of invasion of privacy, witness and evidence tampering and bias intimidation, which is a hate crime. If convicted, he faces the possibility of 10 years in prison. He also could be deported to India, where he was born and remains a citizen, if he's convicted on any counts, The Associated Press reported. ?

AFP - Getty Images

Tyler Clementi is shown in one of his Facebook profile pictures obtained September 30, 2010.

He is not charged in Clementi's suicide, which was widely portrayed in 2010 as a tragic example of bullying and the toll it too often takes on gay teenagers.

For example, television talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres addressed the issue on her show, saying, ?We can?t let intolerance and ignorance take another kid?s life.? The New York Times said outrage over the Clementi case was similar to outrage over the cyber-bullying case of Phoebe Prince, a student in South Hadley, Mass., who also committed suicide that year.

Prosecutors say Ravi spied on Clementi and intimidated him for being gay. The defense says Ravi behaved childishly but did not commit any crime.

?Before the trial, it appeared Ravi was more concerned that a 30-year-old visitor [of Clementi?s] might take some of his possessions than he was about getting a view of their sexual activity,? Jack Levin, a Northeastern University professor and author of books on hate crimes, told msnbc.com. ?The position of the camera became very important.?

The camera appeared to be positioned for a clear view of the bed, said Levin, who was also quoted in media before the trial as being concerned the prosecutors' case might be weak.

?That?s open to interpretation but suggests more than just an attempt to see that Ravi?s possessions were being burglarized,? Levin said, calling the evidence ?one small surprise,? Levin said, noting that invasion of privacy was tough to prove when it?s inside one?s own apartment.

However, the bias intimidation charge is hard to prove because the two knew one another well, Levin said. Most hate crimes are committed by strangers who often state slurs or leave behind graffiti, he said.

About?Ravi?s actions, ?it becomes difficult to determine whether the motivation?was due to sexual orientation or some other conflicts between the roommates that have nothing to do with sexual orientation,? Levin said.

Among those who testified for the prosecution was the man seen in the webcam with Clementi. Identified only as M.B., he said he had noticed the webcam while in a "compromising" position with Clementi.

M.B. testified he met Clementi in August 2010 through an online social network for gay men.

After learning that his roommate watched him via webcam on Sept. 19, 2010, Clementi asked the university to switch to a single room, Reuters said, citing court records.

He jumped off the George Washington Bridge three days after the webcam incident.

Other prosecution witnesses were students and friends of Ravi's, a handful of whom said they watched Clementi's encounter via webcam for a few seconds and only saw two men kissing.

Prosecutors played a videotaped interview of Ravi in which he told police he violated his roommate's privacy but meant no harm. He said he was concerned about the security of his belongings while Clementi was entertaining a visitor.

Police in the video also questioned Ravi about a Twitter posting in which he mentioned a "viewing party." Ravi said the posting had been a joke.

Ravi said he went to a friend's room and used her computer to view images from his own webcam, which he had set up to accept webchat requests automatically, The Associated Press reported.

Jurors heard about a message Ravi sent Clementi apologizing for the webcam and saying his actions had been "good natured."

Gorillas are more like humans than we knew, study says

New research has shown that humans are more like gorillas than scientists previously understood. 15 percent of human DNA is more similar to gorillas than to chimps.

Take a trip to the zoo and you can see gorillas are a lot like us. But a new DNA study says we're even more similar than scientists thought.

From the evolutionary family tree, you'd expect our DNA to be the most similar to chimps, our closest relatives. The new work found that's true for the most part, but it also found that a sizable portion of our genome is closer to a gorilla's than to a chimp's.

"The chimpanzee is often cited as 'our closest living relative' and this is certainly true based on total genome sequence, but the gorilla is nearly as close a relative," Owen Lovejoy of Kent State University, who was not part of the project, said in an email.

That agrees with hints from with some smaller previous genetic studies. The latest work deciphered the entire genome of the gorilla, which Lovejoy called "a substantial achievement."

It reveals "a closer connection between our genome and that of the gorilla than was previously appreciated," Richard Gibbs and Jeffrey Rogers of the Baylor College of Medicine wrote in an editorial accompanying the work published in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

With the new research, scientists now have complete genetic blueprints of the living great apes ? humans, chimps, gorillas and orangutans ? to compare and gain fresh understanding of how humans evolved and developed key traits such as higher brain function and the ability to walk upright.

Humans and chimps evolved separately since splitting from a common ancestor about 6 million years ago.

The latest study was led by scientists at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, a nonprofit British genome research center. Researchers mapped the DNA of a female gorilla and compared it to the genomes of humans and chimps.

As expected, most of the human genome was closer to the chimp's than to the gorilla's. But in about 15 percent of the genome, human and gorilla resemble each other the most. In another 15 percent, chimp and gorilla DNA are closer to each other than chimp is to human. Both those situations clash with what you'd expect from the evolutionary tree, which says humans and chimps should always be the most similar, the researchers said.

The gorilla genome was cracked using DNA from Kamilah, a 300-pound western lowland gorilla from the San Diego Zoo, which maintains a DNA library of endangered animals. Since the mapping of the human genome in 2001, there was a dash to similarly unravel the genetic codes of other animals, particularly primates. The first complete chimp genome was published in 2005 and the orangutan last year.

Like other great apes, gorilla populations in the forests of central Africa have been dwindling from hunting and disease. In decoding Kamilah's DNA, researchers said they hoped to do the same for the mountain gorilla, which is near extinction.

GM says Peugeot just one step in Opel fix

GENEVA (Reuters) - General Motors Co's alliance with French peer PSA Peugeot Citroen is just one part of GM's plan to fix its loss-making Opel unit, Vice Chairman Steve Girsky said, though he declined to say what would come next in the plan.

Girsky, a former Wall Street banker, told reporters at the Geneva Auto Shows on Tuesday he knew investors, consumers and Opel workers do not like uncertainty but they just had to believe him when he said GM has a viable plan for Europe.

He said the alliance GM signed last week with Peugeot is "an additional tool to the toolkit in Europe."

GM paid 320 million euros ($423 million) for a 7 percent stake in Peugeot as part of an alliance designed to save the companies at least $2 billion over the next five years.

"We can't tell you what our play is in Europe," said Girksy. "We will tell you when it plays out over the next period of months and years ... I don't see the play in Europe showing up in one big bang."

Girsky declined to say when the next step would be made in the overall GM profit plan for Europe, where analysts and auto executives say production capacity is at least 20 percent higher than needed to keep companies profitable in a tight and weakening market.

"Excess capacity is not a GM issue, it's an industry issue," Girsky said.

"We've taken steps in the past. The only thing I can tell you at this point in time is that we are working with all of our constituents to improve the profitability of our European business up and down the income statement. Improve the revenue and improve the fixed-cost structure to improve the break-even levels. We will tell you more when we know more."

He also declined to say how much the world's biggest automaker will lose in Europe in 2012. GM's Detroit rival Ford Motor Co said it will lose between $500 million and $600 million, due mainly to an 8.5 percent fall in industry European auto sales this year.

WORKING TOGETHER

Girsky would not comment on whether such a fall in sales will mean GM would lose more money this year than the $747 million it lost in 2011. GM has lost money in Europe for the last 12 years.

"It's not just investors who hate uncertainty," said Girsky. "It's the workers, it's the employees. People are working really hard on this. Please don't tell me we don't have a chance at this. There's a lot of people - German, British, Spanish, Polish, Russian and now French - working together to make this situation work.

"We know there's uncertainty. There's uncertainty in the economic environment across Europe. That is what we have to live with and what we have to work our way through. Working together, we think we can get this done."

Girsky said GM is committed to Opel in Europe, including its Vauxhall brand in Britain. "Any talk that we are not committed to Europe should be off the table," he said.

GM last year named company veteran Karl Stracke as head of its operations in Europe, added senior GM executives to the Opel board and lowered bonus pay for GM executives in Europe.

"We're trying to change the calculus here," said Girsky. "We know that running the same play the way we've been running it won't work, and we're trying to do it differently. This (PSA alliance) is an example of it and you are going to see more."

Girsky said GM and Opel have taken out as much capacity as they can without closing plants. GM has an agreement with the German union IG Metall not to cut jobs through 2014.

Michelle Krebs, analyst with Edmunds.com, said Girsky was taking a risk that investors and consumers will trust GM has a viable plan to fix Opel without offering specifics. Also, she said, the alliance with Peugeot does not take out any of the overcapacity that plagues most European automakers.

SHARED PLATFORM

"Is this what the American taxpayer's want?" said Krebs, who is at the Geneva Auto Show. "It's not solving their problem, which is stemming the losses, and they are basically asking us to trust that the payoff will come in the future."

Girsky, who is overseeing the reshaping of Opel, said the first product on a shared platform would begin production in 2016, but the first concrete signs of efficiencies in the alliance would emerge later this year.

"In the second half of this year, you will start to see some of the product programs and the purchasing initiatives that we do will start to be developed," Girsky said.

Girsky said the Peugeot-GM alliance will work for the companies outside Europe as well, primarily in emerging markets. He was not specific but agreed that Brazil and India could be places where shared-platform vehicles may go on the market. He said cars made for emerging markets will be different than those for Europe.

In India, automakers often make less expensive vehicles with fewer amenities.

Girsky said the new GM-Opel relationship is working to be much more transparent to investors surrounding its costs. As for closing plants, he said GM and Peugeot will make their own decisions on how to manage their production, but restated that the alliance will not cause any plants to close.

Girsky also said it was possible the European market will be depressed for several years. Economic weakness is just one of the reasons it will take GM longer to restructure toward profitability in Europe than it did in North America, where it was helped by government-sponsored bailout and bankruptcy.

"Bankruptcy created a big bang in the U.S.," said Girsky. "In Europe, it will play out as the new product programs are launched."
