Tim Boetsch is hoping his fists, not his mouth, can earn him a title shot

The UFC's next title challengers at welterweight and light heavyweight are both fighters who have less-than-deserving records. Nick Diaz will fight Georges St-Pierre for the title at UFC 158, despite the fact he's coming off a loss and a suspension and Johny Hendricks has four wins in a row.

Chael Sonnen is a middleweight, but his ability to smack talk and bring attention to his fights means he will be fighting for the light heavyweight title after coaching against Jon Jones on "The Ultimate Fighter."

The message to other fighters near a title shot is clear -- the UFC wants title fights that tons of people will watch more than it wants ones that are fairly made with only competitive integrity in mind.? Someone like Tim Boetsch, who is fighting Costa Phillippou at UFC 155 this weekend, is a good fighter on a four-fight win streak.

What he is not is a vocal fighter who talks trash. Boetsch talked with MMA Weekly about how he doesn't intend to change his ways just to get a title shot.

?Just because I?m one of those guys who isn?t very vocal about calling people out and saying I deserve such and such an opponent. Michael (Bisping)?s very good at that and he?s made a career out of it, there are talks of him getting a title shot maybe before even I do, so he?s done a good job of promoting himself and that?s one way of doing it,? said Boetsch.

?I think the better way to do it, or the way I prefer to do it, is to step in the cage and beat people up, and eventually they?re going to have to give me a title shot because I?m going to run out of people to beat up.?

It seems like a better plan, but it didn't work for Hendricks.

Watson: The Tech Writing Prof: Things that Technical Writers Need ...

A recent discussion on the Technical Writer group at LinkedIn asked how to explain to a client that a technical writer need not be an expert in the subject matter of the manuals. As technical writers, we have to be learners, but we usually do not begin as experts in the scientific topics we cover. However, we must be:
  • Experts in Document Design
  • Although technical writers do not need to be experts in semiology, psychoanalysis, or content analysis, we need to know enough about document design to create manuals, web sites, brochures, and other communication packages that speak to the audience. We need to know enough about the audience's eye movement across the page to make a page that flows. That is, for English speaking audiences, we need to know that the audience's eye will track from the upper left to the lower right of the page. For audiences who primarily read Chinese, Hebrew, or Arabic, those eyes will track in different directions.

Additionally, we need to be aware of the limitations of the fonts we incorporate (Are the lines so thick that they are hard to read from a distance?), the mix of colors we use (Can the elements of our pictures be distinguished as separate elements?), and the amount of white space incorporated in our illustrations and text. Although Jan White claims that serifs have a functional value in that they direct the eye and san serif fonts anchor the eye (Kostelnick and Roberts, 1998, p142), there have not been corroborating studies confirming these findings. Therefore, other than my own anecdotal evidence in support of White's study, I really cannot recommend this limitation on use of fonts. However, I can point to more than a few sources that would confirm that using more than two or three fonts on a page will reduce the readability of the page (Becker, 2009)(Krug, 2006, p36).

As mentioned previously, we also need to consider the cultural side of our pages and illustrations. Do procedural photos that are directed at Americans include someone pointing to the audience with the middle finger? Does a photo for an Arabian audience show the sole of a model's foot?

Storm stories: ?kicks us while we?re down?

Just as utility companies in the Northeast fixed power lines and some residents regained heat and electricity, another powerful storm rocked the New York area on Wednesday, sparking fears that the region could again plunge into darkness and freezing temperatures. Yahoo! News invited residents to share their short anecdotes and photos from the nor'easter. Here are some excerpts:

11:40 a.m.

New winter storm kicks us while we're down

MONROE TOWHSHIP, N.J.?This week's nor'easter began as a freezing rain. By the time it left the Northeast, it had dumped anywhere from several inches to more than a foot of snow, adding to the misery of those still without power from Hurricane Sandy.

Monroe Township, where this photo above was taken, received about six to eight inches. Some parts of New Jersey lost power again, after just getting back service after the hurricane.

But many people are still in the dark going into their second week. Gasoline is getting easier to find, which is a boon to those heating their homes with portable generators.

However, there have been several local fatalities from carbon monoxide poisoning from generators used with inadequate ventilation. Some residents in northern Jersey have been told it could take until early December before power is completely restored.

So many transformers have been destroyed that the power companies cannot get enough replacement parts. A forecast for warmer temperatures this weekend should make life a little less miserable for those affected.

Nor'easter disrupts Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts

QUEENS?One week we have a bad hurricane, and the next week we have snow.

The snow, combined with wind, has slowed down the utility repairs. A number of people in areas like Long Beach, Long Island, the Rockaways, and coastal areas of New Jersey are without power. Heavy snowfall such as this can cause branches to snap and fall on above ground power lines.

Normally, snow like this wouldn't be such a bad deal, but when you're dealing with big populations without light or power, it can be life-threatening. If the snow fall is bad enough, it may also slow the delivery of much-needed supplies.

10:48 a.m.

Storm brings more snow, shivering commute to New York

MANHATTAN?In midtown on Wednesday night, people waited in the snow, shivering in the deepening cold for a bus while New Yorkers like me rushed to the subway to get home. The sidewalks were slippery, ankle-deep slush submerged parts of the streets, and the snow was sticking. Wet snow coated the debris left behind by Hurricane Sandy. A few door attendants shoveled snow from the sidewalks making a secure walkway for people.

After Hurricane Sandy battered the city last week, most New Yorkers felt they deserve a break from the crazy weather. Citizens who reside in lower Manhattan and in the storm-ravaged areas now had to suffer a setback in its Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts because of this storm.

? Shamarie Knight

9:30 a.m.

Nor'easter bears down on storm-weary New York

BROOKLYN?The MTA is still in the process of recovering, with multiple lines still not running normally or at all. Many of my colleagues just returned to work on Monday after a week in which, at best, they were stranded in their homes without a working subway system or gas for their cars and, at worst, they lost those homes entirely. The city is pouring considerable resources into trying to get everything up and running, and another major storm certainly isn't welcome right now.

The idea of once again losing the service of the just-repaired subway lines that are running is not an appealing one?especially with temperatures continuing to drop. Therefore, I'm viewing the fluffy snowflakes currently falling outside my window with less than my usual delight.

? Lucrezia Wise

Wednesday

11:43 p.m.

Storm divides Northeast into two groups: haves and have-nots

DENVILLE, N.J.?There are two types in northern New Jersey right now during the nor'easter: the have and the have-nots. Those of us who have power are sheltering friends and family and doing our best to support our neighbors.

Many, however, refuse to take refuge in the homes of friends or family. They feel they would be an imposition or cannot bring pets. People who know better are freezing in their homes as a nor'easter dumps up to six inches of snow here in the New York-New Jersey region. Those who have power are hoping we don't have additional outages. It's very cold and there is a biting wind that is howling outside.

Snow is piling up here in Morris County and the roads are a mess. The schools already called for a 90-minute delay Thursday morning?after having missed so much school already. The lights have flickered and the trees look heavy with wet snow.

? Gioia Degenaars

10:07 p.m.

Sandy's aftermath in New Jersey makes nor'easter doubly hard

ESSEX COUNTY, N.J.?Hurricane Sandy hit us hard here in New Jersey, just west of Manhattan. We did not get a lot of rain from the storm, but the wind did us in.

Fast-forward to this week. Our building has no heat or hot water due to a power failure with the electric pumps that power the boiler. This is lovely for us, as we have been sitting in the cold for longer than one week. I have three children, a newborn, a 1-and-a-half-year old, and a 6-year-old so it has been a nightmare trying to use a small electric heater to heat a two-bedroom apartment. It makes you want to cry because your kids are cold and all you can do is give them blankets and dress them as warmly as possible.

School final reopened today, and many children in my son's kindergarten class were absent. Some people will not have power until Nov. 9 and tensions are flaring in those areas because of a winter storm that is occurring today. I have talked to a few residents about Sandy. Our friend's roof caved in after a large tree smashed into it. He still has no power and has two children who had to go to their grandma's in a neighboring county to stay because it is too cold for them to be without heat.

The debris clean-up has been slow. There is a lot of debris in our neighborhood such as broken glass, shingles, siding, toys, trash cans, garbage, and a lot of tree limbs. It will take a week of two before the area will return to normal again. Sandy hit the area hard but we will all bounce back soon.

? Arrivanna Brooks

9:06 p.m.

Like a Hurricane Sandy encore

FREEHOLD, N.J.?I am writing this in the midst of yet another blackout. On Oct. 29, Hurricane Sandy hit my hometown of Freehold. That was only nine days ago. I was without power for an entire week.

Now, just four days after power was restored, I am sitting here in the dark again. A nor'easter is currently dumping snow on my neighborhood. There are six inches of snow on the ground, and it is still coming down. The snowstorm caused a transformer explosion, knocking out power on my block. Trees weakened by Hurricane Sandy are falling under the weight of snow. More and more of my neighbors are losing power by the minute. Fortunately, I still have gasoline leftover to run my generator. But I will have to buy more gasoline tomorrow.

Residents in Freehold were just getting back to normal when this nor'easter arrived tonight. People are relying on generators for power again. They are burning wood to stay warm. And tomorrow morning, they are going to need gasoline to run their snow blowers too.

Some of my neighbors rely on well water. But without power for the pumps, they have no water. For this reason, they left town during Hurricane Sandy. If power is out too long, they will have to leave Freehold again.

Hurricane Sandy's Impact On E-commerce Revealed | Business 2 ...

In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, many were in shock from the tragedies and damage left behind. While residents of the East Coast work to recover, states are sending support in the forms of donations and volunteers. For anyone who would like to pitch in, the Red Cross is accepting donations.

A few days after the storm, some industry and general news media turned their attention to Sandy?s impact on online sales. Most articles said it was too soon to tell how Sandy had affected sales, but Monetate engineer and data guru Jeff Patti had some real answers.

During the Hurricane impact days, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (Oct 29-31, 2012), consumers spent much less online compared to an average of the other Monday through Wednesdays in October.

Broken down by day and state, these numbers reveal quite a story:

Consumer Online Spending on Monday, Oct 29, 2012:

  • NY: -26.07%
  • NJ: -22.30%
  • PA: -18.52%
  • CT: -19.32%
  • DE: -32.61%

Five-state average: -23.76%

Consumer Online Spending on Tuesday, Oct 30, 2012:

  • NY: -47.28%
  • NJ: -68.71%
  • PA: -24.23%
  • CT: -54.95%
  • DE: -26.47%

Five-state average: -44.33%

Consumer Online Spending on Wednesday, Oct 31, 2012:

  • NY: -33.17%
  • NJ: -53.92%
  • PA: -12.47%
  • CT: -42.80%
  • DE: -16.47%

Five-state average: -31.77%

When looking at ecommerce spending nationwide, online sales were down 12.24% for the three-day period. Although the dramatic drop in the hardest hit states contributed to the national dip, spending was down across the board in most regions during Sandy.

Obviously, the repair and recovery efforts of the affected areas are far more important than the storm?s toll on ecommerce. But it is worth noting that Sandy hurt online spending last week, even if we don?t really know the long-term ecommerce repercussions of the storm yet.

Strong earthquake off Guatemala kills at least 48

SAN MARCOS, Guatemala (Reuters) - A strong earthquake off the coast of Guatemala killed at least 48 people and trapped others under rubble on Wednesday, crushing homes and cars, destroying roads and forcing evacuations as far away as Mexico City.

Most of the dead were buried under debris in San Marcos state, a mountainous region near the Mexican border. Landslides triggered by the 7.4-magnitude quake blocked highways and complicated rescue efforts.

It was the strongest earthquake to hit the Central American nation since 1976, when a 7.5-magnitude quake killed more than 20,000 people.

President Otto Perez, who confirmed the death toll after returning to the capital Guatemala City from a lightning trip to San Marcos, said that as many as 23 people were unaccounted for, while 153 people were being housed in emergency shelters.

"It's very sad to meet people here who are waiting to find their families who are still buried," Perez said in San Marcos. "It's really a tragedy and we will do all we can to help the families that are suffering."

Rescue workers in bright yellow helmets worked through the night pulling bodies from the rubble-strewn streets of San Pedro Sacatepequez, San Marcos, as dazed locals looked on, taking stock of the damage.

"Thank God we're alive," said resident Arnulfo Portillo. "To be honest, there's quite a few families who have been hit badly, but we're a tight-knight community and we'll come out on top."

In San Cristobal Cucho, also in San Marcos, all but one of an 11-member family died, buried under rubble, volunteer fireman Ovidio Fuentes told local radio. Only the 17-year-old son survived.

Local Red Cross chief Carlos Enrique Alvarado said 75 homes were destroyed in the city of San Marcos alone and authorities said damage to the prison forced them to transfer 101 inmates to another jail.

Perez, who announced three days of mourning, said Spain and Venezuela had offered help. Authorities distributed 16,000 emergency rations and mobilized more than 2,000 soldiers to help with the rescue effort. The energy ministry said 73,000 people were left without electricity.

In Guatemala City, 100 miles from the quake's epicenter, the streets filled with office workers forced to evacuate buildings, although most soon returned to work.

"It was really big. I felt quite nauseous," said Vanessa Castillo, 32, a secretary who was evacuated from her 10th floor office in the capital.

Building janitor Jorge Gamboa said: "I was in the bathroom. When I came out the office was empty and I thought, what's happening? They didn't even say goodbye."

The epicenter was 26 miles below the surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was felt in El Salvador and more than 760 miles away in Mexico City, where some people also fled offices and homes.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a small tsunami was registered on Guatemala's coast, although there were no reports that it caused any damage.

Coral autopsy reveals Great Barrier Reef collapse

Nutrient-rich slurry from farms has been causing coral populations on Australia's Great Barrier Reef to crash for 90 years.

The corals collapsed between the 1920s and 1950s, say John Pandolfi at the University of Queensland in Brisbane and his colleagues. The team took cores from three reefs and worked out when the corals died. Two had little coral left after the 1950s, while the third had been colonised since then by different types.

By the 1920s, European settlers were farming intensively near rivers flowing onto the reef, boosting agricultural run-off by up to a factor of 20. Events like cyclones kill coral, but the extra nutrients in the water help seaweed move in afterwards, preventing coral from regenerating, says Terry Done of the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Townsville, Queensland.

The reefs were already in decline again when monitoring began in the 1980s, says Joana Figueiredo of James Cook University, also in Townsville. Pandolfi's work shows that it was pristine until the 1920s.

Lenovo Q2 earnings reveal record high sales of $87 billion, highestever market share

PC maker Lenovo has reported its earnings for Q2, and there was plenty of good news: $8.7 billion in sales, a record high, a PC market share of 15.6 percent, it's largest ever and operating profit of $206 million, 24 percent higher than the same period last year. The only bad news is that profit growth is slower than previous quarters, mostly due to Lenovo's reaching into new markets like tablets, smartphones and connected TVs. for now however, Lenovo can claim the crown as world's largest laptop PC maker, while desktop sales were also up five percent from last year. Its mobile internet division reported sales of $718 million, and is the second largest seller in China of smartphones and tablets. It's also China's number one PC vendor with sales outpacing the next four vendors combined and racked up double digit market share in the EMEA region for the first time. Check the press release after the break for all of the details, we'll be back in a few months to find out how all that new Windows 8 hardware sold.

U.S. election day straw poll

I'm Canadian, so I care about the U.S. election only in so far as which candidate is less likely to invade us for our rich, tasty maple syrup reserves, and more likely to keep sending us movies, TV shows, and video games, all now the property of Disney Corp. Yet I understand a lot of you are U.S. citizens and care very much about the next 4 years of leadership in your country. So -- GET OUT AND VOTE.

Then, once you're done, come on back to iMore and we'll return to arguing about things from which there's never respite -- Apple vs. Google. iPhone vs. iPad. Marvel vs. DC. Coke vs. Pepsi. Star Wars vs. Star Trek. The Beatles vs. Elvis. Tastes great vs. less filling. Jackie Chan vs. Bruce Lee. Boxers vs. briefs. Cases vs. naked. Patents vs. no patents. Sparrow vs. Mailplane. 5 Guys vs. In-and-Out. East coast vs. West siyeeeeeeed. And shaved vs. unshaved (hey, it's MOvember!)

Because remember folks, we're all in this together. We all have to make this work.

Egypt?s Coptic Church Chooses Bishop Tawadros As New Pope

Egypt?s Coptic Orthodox Church, the largest Christian minority in the Middle East, chose Bishop Tawadros as the new pope Sunday in the first election in more than 40 years, news media reported.

The new patriarch has been chosen at a time when Egypt?s Coptic community fears losing ground in the wake of the Islamist takeover of politics, sectarian violence and pressures within the Church for reform.

Bishop Tawadros, the 118th leader of the Copts, succeeds Pope Shenouda III who died in March at the age of 88. The 60-year-old will be enthroned in a ceremony Nov. 18.

The name of the new pope-designate was picked from a glass bowl with the names of the three shortlisted candidates by a blindfolded 6-year-old boy at a ceremony in Cairo?s St. Mark?s Cathedral, the BBC has reported.

All the three candidates, the other two being Bishop Raphael and Father Raphael Ava Mina, were chosen in a ballot by a council of some 2,400 church and community officials in October.

The boy who was designated to pick the new leader was chosen from 12 shortlisted children.

The acting leader of the Coptic Church, Bishop Pachomius, took the ballot from the boy?s hand and showed it to all those gathered in the cathedral to witness the ceremony.

Christians, once widespread in Egypt, were reduced to a minority following the Arab conquest in the 7th?century. They make up about 10 percent of Egypt?s 83 million population now. They are divided into a majority of Coptic Orthodox Church and a Coptic Catholic Church in union with the Vatican which has about 250,000 members, according to a Reuters?report.

Speaking after the televised ceremony, Bishop Tawadros indicated that his plan was to reduce Coptic Church?s explicitly political role endorsed by his predecessor, who was also a supporter of ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

?The most important thing is for the church to go back and live consistently within the spiritual boundaries because this is its main work, spiritual work,? the bishop was quoted as saying by the New York Times. He promised to begin a process of ?rearranging the house from the inside.?

In a recent television interview, Bishop Tawadros had said that his priorities were to live in harmony ?with our brothers, the Muslims? and to promote ?moderate constructive integration in the society.?

In October last year, 27 people ? most of them Coptic Christians protesting the torching of a church during the Egyptian uprising ? were killed in what came to be known as the Maspero massacre.

Egypt?s Christians complain that churches, including St Mary's Church in the Cairo district of Imbaba, have come under attacks from the radical Islamists since the Arab Spring.

Genealogy's Star: Everyone now on FamilySearch Family Tree

I finally found someone who was registered with FamilySearch.org and had never been invited to use Family Tree. When he signed into FamilySearch.org, the link for Family Tree appeared automatically. He did not have to further register to use Family Tree. This coupled with the forwarding notices in New.FamilySearch.org, increases the level of awareness of the program.

Well, "awareness of the program" is a highly relative term. If you are an avid genealogist it is possible you have used FamilySearch.org. If you are a casual genealogist, likely you are not aware of this resource. Many users of the New.FamilySearch.org program are likely seeing their first reference to the replacement program this week. In a discussion today with six individuals mildly interested in genealogy, I found only one that that even heard of FamilySearch.org's Family Tree program and he had only looked at it once or twice before.

I think this reaction is typical since New.FamilySearch.org has been out for years and I find people all the time who have never heard of the program.

SPORTS IN BRIEF: Charges dropped for youth hockey player; Two Victoria products at World Junior A Challenge; Local baseball coach a B.C. scout for Minnesota Twins

A pair of Victoria products will represent Team Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge in Nova Scotia this week.

Defenceman Nolan de Jong (1995) of the Victoria Grizzlies and forward Wade Murphy (1993) of the Penticton Vees will face the Czech Republic on Tuesday and Russia on Wednesday.

Both games are at noon, and are streamed online at Hockeycanada.ca.

De Jong and Murphy are joined by former Grizzly Evan Richardson (1994) of the Powell River Kings.

Last year Victoria?s Wes Myron, then of the Grizzlies, represented Canada West and won gold.

On Friday (Nov. 2) the Grizzlies host the Cowichan Capitals, 7:15 p.m. at Bear Mountain Arena.

Last weekend Leo Fitzgerald pounced on a rebound and chipped it over Vees goalie Chad Katunar (a Victoria native) to give the Grizzlies a 3-2 win in double overtime. It was the second time the Grizzlies (12-5-1) defeated the league?s best Vees (13-2-2) this season.

Murphy scored for the Vees in both games and is the top scorer in the B.C. Hockey League with 10 goals and 16 assists in 15 games.

Murphy and de Jong are committed to well reputed NCAA programs for 2013-14, Murphy to the University of North Dakota, de Jong to the University of Michigan.

Chargers dropped for youth hockey player

RCMP will not pursue charges from a youth ice hockey incident Sept. 23 at Nanaimo?s Frank Crane Arena.

A player from the bantam-aged Saanich Braves (ages 13-14) suffered a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding caused by an alleged spear from the stick of a Nanaimo player.

A parent of the player who was hit complained. The victim required medical treatment for the injuries.

?Numerous witness accounts and a video of the event failed to identify any evidence of criminality, said Constable Gary O?Brien in a statement from Nanaimo RCMP.

?The players, parents and Nanaimo minor hockey officials have been notified of the results of the investigation.?

Local coach to scout for Twins

Youth baseball coach and UVic computer science doctorate Gautam Srivastava has picked up a part time job with major league status.

Srivastava will scout for the Minnesota Twins, covering the local region for the Twins? Canadian scout.

In 2010, Srivastava was named Baseball Canada?s coach of the year and is currently the general manager for the Victoria Eagles Baseball Club.

?The Twins are convinced having one of their scouts based in B.C. gives them a leg up in identifying our local talent,? said Srivastava in the Eagles release.

Increased productivity and dignity at work are achievable ...

David Yamada, in his blog Minding the Workplace, states that

?the more we can get the concept of human dignity into our everyday discussions of work, the better.?

SafetyAtWorkBlog is a supporter of dignity at work and it is heartening to see that the concept is being?discussed?globally. ?Dignity, as an activator for change, seems to be a missing element in not only The Hedgehog Review but also very?recently?released reports, OHS guidances and Australia?s debate on productivity.

The Australian Human Rights Commission released a report last week about sexual discrimination called Working Without Fear. ?A quick word search for ?dignity? shows no results, nor do searches for ?bully? or ?bullying?. ?This is disappointing but perhaps should not be a surprise as this report indicates again that the Australian Government considers sexual discrimination and workplace bullying to be separate issues although lawyers and the media often overlap the two.

The Working?Without?Fear report, based on a large telephone survey concludes that

??. targets of sexual harassment are most likely to be women and less than 40 years of age. Consistent with previous surveys, the 2012 National Survey also shows that the harassers are most likely to be male co-workers, though women were at least five times more likely than men to have been harassed by a boss or employer. Men harassing women accounted for more than half (56%) of all sexual harassment, while male harassment of men accounted for nearly a quarter (23%) of sexual harassment.

It is also concerning that there has been a significant increase in the number of people who have experienced negative consequences (eg victimisation) as a result of making a formal report or complaint of sexual harassment. Furthermore, understanding and reporting of sexual harassment remain low.?

These results will provide an?interesting?contrast to the final report of Australia?s Parliamentary Inquiry into?Workplace?Bullying when it is released, probably, early next year.

WorkSafe Victoria?s new guidance on ?Workplace bullying ? prevention and response? also fails to mention ?dignity? or ?harassment?, again supporting separation of human needs and values into operational and policy silos. ?It is exactly this establishment of operational and policy demarcations that will impede efforts to reduce the consequences of harassment,?bullying?and stress in Australian workplaces.

WorkSafe?s bullying guidance has provided the clarity demanded by workers and businesses on what is and what is not, considered workplace bullying. ?It states that:

?Threats to harm someone, acts of violence, assault, property damage and stalking
are criminal matters that should be referred to the police. Responses at the
workplace should be appropriate to the seriousness of what has occurred.

This guide is not intended to cover dissatisfaction or grievances with organisational
and management practices or poor management practices on their own, as they are
not workplace bullying. At times people may feel that their working life is unpleasant
and that they are being inappropriately treated, but feeling upset or undervalued at
work does not mean an individual is being bullied at work.?

Clearly WorkSafe?believes?that some issues that are being mistakenly brought under?workplace?bullying should be reported to the police. ?It could be that WorkSafe Victoria is a victim of its own high public profile on workplace safety issues even though WorkSafe has always clearly defined occupational violence from?workplace?bullying.

Performance Management

The quote above also addresses the misinterpretation of ?rough? or poorly handled performance management as workplace bullying. ?Performance management and the associated performance reviews can be an enormous waste of time and, SafetyAtWorkBlog suggests, may be a major contributory factor to why the Australian public service seems to have a high concern and higher rate of?workplace?bullying than non-governmental workplaces. ?Poorly handled?performance?reviews and personnel management can counter many of the positive?workplace?culture and work health and well-being initiatives and there are strong parallels between what OHS regulators promote, and enforce, as consultation and personnel management. ?The work of Australian psychologist Graham Winter discusses performance reviews in more detail.

The Australian Government has the opportunity to develop and apply a multi-disciplinary approach to workplace?stress and?mental?health when the Parliamentary inquiry releases its?workplace?bullying report. ?There is likely to be a chance to apply positive control measures on ?decent work? and ?dignity at work? as?complementary?values to its ?fair work? initiatives and laws. ?This could be achieved?without?being accused of ?nanny state? policies but as recent ill-informed comments from business groups and conservative politicians have shown, such a strategy will require careful consideration if it is to?achieve?the cultural legacy it deserves.

Productivity

Workplace safety is an integral part of the ongoing political discussion about productivity. But managing safety and reducing physical and mental harm is hard work. ?It requires companies to reassess the values they apply to their business and their workforce and a reassessment of personal and corporate values can be confronting. ?Some?companies never get to the point of examining the human cost of production and their legacy of?unjustifiable?death will outlive any profits and honours gained.

Any genuine discussion about increasing productivity must include an analysis of the basis of production ? the?physical?and mental welfare of the workforce. ?We work harder when we are happy. ?We work harder when we are not tired. ?We work harder when we know we are safer. ?We work harder when we know we are?supported?by our supervisors and valued by our executives. ?We work harder when we know we will not be harassed at work, or bullied or exploited.

Productivity is being discussed at the senior levels of Australian politics and?corporations?in the?contexts?of new markets, cost control, profits and taxes. ?Often one hears about the need to regain Australia?s productivity but perhaps the safety professionals, human resources experts and wellbeing advocates need to remind those policy?decision?makers that people produce the goods and services for companies to sell and for governments to provide. Perhaps we should be saying that to achieve a sustainable level of productivity, attention should?be?given to the mental and?physical?needs of the workers and the employees, and that harassment, bullying, stress, fatigue etc should be addressed through a unified theory of healthy productivity.

Mitt Romney Makes Education Pitch In Final Days Before Election

WASHINGTON -- For the last year, education advocates have been trying to get the subject of America's beleaguered public schools onto the agenda of the presidential election. Aside from a few mentions in the debates, the conversation has been pretty one-sided, with President Barack Obama consistently emphasizing the need to invest in education on the campaign trail -- and little mention of the subject from Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in his own stump speech.

That appears to have changed in the final 72 hours leading up to the election, with Romney incorporating a few key lines on education into his "closing argument" speech in a last-minute bid to sway votes from women and Latinos -- voters who prioritize education but have favored Obama throughout the presidential race.

?You know that if the president is re-elected, he will say every good thing he can about education, but in the final analysis, he will do what his largest campaign supporters -- the public-sector unions -- insist upon," Romney said while unveiling his closing argument in Wisconsin on Friday. "And your kids will have the same schools with the same results.?

?When I am president, I will be a voice of the children and their parents. There is no union for the PTA,? he continued, a line he has since repeated at each campaign rally in the final days. ?I will give parents the information they need to know if their school is failing, and the choice they need to pick the school where their child can succeed.?

While this is the first time Romney has included this critique in his stump address, the framing does reflect his attitude in previous speeches. At a fundraiser in May, before Romney's only major education address this cycle at the Chamber of Commerce, he similarly sought to paint Obama as a union apologist.

"If I'm president of the United States, instead of just giving lip service to improving our schools, I will actually put the kids first and the union behind in giving our kids better teachers, better options and better choices for a better future," Romney said at the fundraiser.

"The president can't have it both ways: He can't talk up reform, while indulging the groups that block it," he added later, in the speech on education. "He can't be the voice of disadvantaged public school kids, and the protector of special interests."

But Romney's analysis ignores the nuances of Obama's record. The refrain of putting children first is the mantra of a movement known as "education reform," an initiative that includes many Democrats and counts Obama among its biggest cheerleaders. Until recently, the unions' desires dominated Democratic education policies, but in 2007, the group Democrats for Education reform formed, creating a base within the party to advocate for issues that are often thorny for unions: teacher quality, school accountability, charter schools and using students' standardized test scores to partiallly formulate teachers ratings.

In reality, the Obama administration -- and campaign -- has tried to delicately balance these two, often competing interests: the unions -- Democratic supporters known for their ground game -- and the reformers. A few hundred billion dollars of stimulus funding put 450,000 teachers back to work, the U.S. Education Department calculates, supporting a union priority of growing its ranks and keeping class sizes small; on the other hand, the Race to the Top competition angered unions by encouraging the growth of charter schools and evaluations based on test scores.

Romney has latched onto the union-appeasing side of this equation, hammering Obama in the final presidential debate for using federal funds to hire teachers, but adding, ?I love teachers,? several times. The National Education Association, the nation?s largest teachers union, responded to those remarks by mocking Romney?s purported affection for teachers as part of its Get Out the Vote efforts. Obama, too, has repeatedly raised the issue of Romney?s opposition to hiring more teachers when attacking the GOP nominee over education policy.

In response to Romney?s latest riff on education, NEA President Dennis Van Roekel told The Huffington Post on Sunday that the Republican candidate ?just doesn?t get? education reform.

"Education is key to the nation?s success and helping us solidify the economic recovery of the last few years," Van Roekel said in a statement. "President Obama gets that, it?s why he?s supported education programs from early childhood through making college more affordable. Mitt Romney just doesn?t get that true education reform takes all stakeholders -- educators, parents, and community -- working together for students. Being divisive and providing kids with only the education they can afford hurts all of us in the end."

(AP) ? And now, to conclude, a few parting misstatements.

Come Wednesday, or sometime later if the election result is still in the balance, only one man will be left standing and the loser's inventory of misleading claims, out-of-context assertions and warped-reality advertising will fade into some inglorious corner of history. But we're not quite done with them yet.

In campaign speeches that serve as closing arguments, President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney are still at it. Romney is still misrepresenting the impact of Obama's health care law on your wallet. Obama is still masking the sticker shock of his plan to tax the rich.

Call it a perfect storm of Frankenfacts. Here's a sampling of the claims coming from the stump and the airwaves in the campaign's 11th-hour tempest:

OBAMA in Green Bay, Wis., on Thursday: "It's time to use the savings from ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to start paying down our debts here and rebuilding America. Right now, we can put people back to work fixing up roads and bridges. Right now, we can expand broadband into rural neighborhoods and make sure our schools are state of the art.

THE FACTS: If saying things over and over could make them true, this would be true.

But it's not. This claim is the kudzu of the Obama campaign, the weed that regrows no matter how many times it's whacked.

The wars were financed mostly with borrowing, so ending them does not free a pile of cash for anything else. "Rebuilding America" with war savings merely means continuing to borrow and pile up debt, but for purposes other than war.

___

ROMNEY campaign ad: "Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China. Mitt Romney will fight for every American job."

THE FACTS: You wouldn't know from this audacious account of the auto-industry crisis that:

?It's over.

?Romney also counseled bankruptcy for the automakers, but without the government bailout that represented its only realistic chance of succeeding.

?Chrysler says the possibility of making some of its Jeeps in China does not threaten Jeep production in the U.S.

?Romney wrongly predicted during the crisis that if the companies got a government bailout, "You can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye." Both companies have returned to profitability.

___

OBAMA in Green Bay: "If we're serious about the deficit, we've also got to ask the wealthiest Americans to go back to the tax rates that they paid when Bill Clinton was in office."

THE FACTS: His tax plan is not just a return to the good old days. Yes, he wants to return to Clinton-era tax rates for couples making over $250,000 and individuals making over $200,000. That means a top rate of 39.6 percent, up from 35 percent. But there's more. His administration has already enacted new taxes on the wealthy, through the health care law, imposing a 0.9 percent Medicare surcharge on richer households and a 3.8 percent tax on investment income for high earners.

Apart from the health care law, the president is also proposing a rule to ensure that households earning over $1 million pay a 30 percent minimum tax rate. And he supports raising Medicare premiums for well-to-do retirees.

___

ROMNEY in Roanoke, Va., on Thursday:

?"And that health insurance cost? They've gone up $2,500 a family."

?"We're gonna restore that funding to Medicare, and also we're gonna repeal and replace Obamacare so your premiums don't go up by $2,500 a year."

THE FACTS: First, Romney's suggestion that premiums have gone up $2,500 a year bears no semblance to reality. They haven't gone up by quite that much over four years, either.

The total contribution of workers and their employers to a family health care plan has risen $2,370 on average since 2009, Obama's first year in office, according to annual surveys of workplace health insurance by the Kaiser Family Foundation, an authority cited by both political parties. That's an average increase of less than $600 a year.

Second, premiums paid by workers have gone up much less than that. Employers pay the largest share of health insurance and have absorbed most of the increases.

Health insurance premiums paid by workers have risen $801 for a family plan over four years, or $172 for an individual plan.

Moreover, Obama's health care law came into effect in 2010. Over the period since then, the total cost of a family plan is $1,975 higher on average, and the share paid by workers is up $319 in that time ? altogether a far cry from the notion that Obamacare is already costing families thousands of dollars a year. Indeed, Kaiser's experts, along with nonpartisan analysts in the government, say Obama's law thus far has played only a marginal role in rising costs. Its main effects don't start until 2014, when coverage expansion kicks off. Obama has clearly oversold the ability of his law to bring costs down, but Romney's assertion that it already is breaking the bank is fanciful.

___

OBAMA in Green Bay: :

?"Another $5 trillion tax cut that favors the wealthy isn't change."

?"But if the price of peace in Washington is cutting deals that will kick students off of financial aid, or get rid of funding for Planned Parenthood, or eliminate health care for millions on Medicaid who are poor or elderly or disabled, just to give a millionaire a tax cut, I'm not having it."

THE FACTS: This supercharged critique of Romney's agenda assigns a misleading price tag to the Republican's tax plan, which calls for tax cuts for all income groups, not just millionaires. Romney is not proposing to "eliminate health care" for Medicaid recipients or to throw students to the wolves, although it's within the bounds of political debate to assume the worst of your rival's policy ideas.

Obama gets the $5 trillion figure from a forecast by the Tax Policy Center that Romney's tax cuts would reduce federal revenue by $465 billion in 2015 ? in the ballpark of $5 trillion if spread over 10 years. But Obama is ignoring a crucial feature of the plan: that Romney says he would greatly lower its cost by reducing or eliminating some tax credits, deductions and exemptions, especially for wealthier taxpayers. Romney won't be specific, but it's clear $5 trillion is just one side of the equation.

___

ROMNEY in Roanoke: "We're gonna create 12 million new jobs and more take-home pay."

THE FACTS: Romney never gets to the nitty-gritty of how these jobs would be created. He merely sketches a general five-point plan calling for lower taxes, more trade, better worker training, deficit cuts and accelerated energy production.

Still, he could well succeed in this goal, because it is not particularly ambitious.

Most economists think that about that many jobs will return over the next four years no matter who wins, absent another big economic setback. It doesn't take boom times to create jobs at a rate of 3 million a year.

To reach Romney's job pledge, the workforce would have to grow at an average of 250,000 a month. While that's above recently depressed averages, it's not abnormally high for non-recessionary times when the economy is growing at close to 3 percent or higher. Since July, the economy has created an average of 173,000 jobs a month.

In essence, then, Romney with this claim is promising a return to modest economic growth. Saying 12 million jobs sounds better.
